Friday Science Break – What is Antisense?

November 18, 2016 By John

One of my favorite topics is science fiction. Planet-hopping marauders venturing across galaxies far and wide, monsters lurking in the shadows, aliens beaming up campers and ruining vacation plans . . . Everything sci-fi thrills the hell out of me.

Still, some sci-fi is a little out there (not that there’s anything wrong with that). While I love a far-out sci-fi yarn as much as the next guy, what really gets my gears turning is a healthy dose of science fiction that’s based on a little science fact.

That’s why I’ve decided to devote each Friday to sharing a link with my readers that covers some incredible breakthroughs in science, medicine, technology, and a whole lot more.

We’ll start with the topics that heavily influenced my sci-fi thriller, The R.E.M. Effect, and go from there.

So if you’ve got a few minutes to kill this Friday, check out the link below. This week I’d like to share an article from 2013 covering the real-life advancement of antisense technology.

While this tech takes an ominous turn in The R.E.M. Effect, the advancement of antisense is promising for the future of healthcare.

The R.E.M. Effect: Taking Pre-Orders Through November 14th

November 10, 2016 By John

Less than one week before The R.E.M. Effect hits the digital shelves!

Tuesday, November 15th is the Kindle release date for The R.E.M. Effect (paperback is currently scheduled for the 22nd).

If sci-fi thrillers involving Big Pharma, sleeping pills, coverups and conspiracies sound like your type of literary action, then you don’t want to miss this!

In the meantime, you can preorder your digital copy for Kindle by checking out my Amazon page here.

Since this post is already the most shameless of plugs, I might as well encourage you to sign up for my weekly email club. The current format shoots out a weekly email on Fridays titled Science Break Friday. The emails cover interesting topics in the world of medicine and technology, as well as links to outside resources like articles and videos.

The coolest part of this year’s editorial calendar for Science Break Friday is that each topic ties into The R.E.M. Effect in one way or another. A lot of research went into writing this novel, and I wanted to share that research and background with interested readers.

So if you have a minute to kill, feel free to browse around the site and see if there’s anything you like (or don’t like). I’m always open to suggestions, so if there’s a blog post you would like to see in the future, or a topic you would like to discuss, just drop me a line in the inbox and I’ll be in touch.

And if you’ve made it this far, you deserve a big THANK YOU for your interest in The R.E.M. Effect.

Have a great day!

A Look at the Drug Behind The REM Series

January 14, 2016 By John

Trouble sleeping? Then Asteria Pharmaceuticals has the pill for you.

Turning insomnia into a relic of the past.

It’s called Ocula, and it’s the pharmaceutical breakthrough of the 21st century. No longer are patients bound by unreliable sleeping medications that only treat the symptoms of insomnia and sleeplessness.

With Ocula, patients are treated at the source of their insomnia, freeing them to experience the perfect eight-hour sleep cycle—guaranteed.

How is this possible? Because Ocula is the first drug in the history of pharmacology to use gene-silencing technology—also known as antisense therapy—to inhibit the genes responsible for chronic sleep disorders.

By binding to your body’s RNA, and then blocking the production of faulty proteins, Ocula keeps the genes linked to insomnia and sleeplessness from reproducing.

The result? A genetic sequence that defaults to the human body’s natural eight-hour sleep cycle.

Say goodbye to tossing and turning through sleepless nights . . . relying on addictive sleeping pills that leave you feeling groggy and tired the next day . . . worrying about trudging through another day at work without sleep.

Isn’t it time you got the quality shut-eye you deserve?

Well now you can. So if you can’t sleep, don’t worry—Asteria Pharmaceuticals has a pill for that.
